Essentials of Critical Care Medicine
Critical Care is a fairly modern specialty which gained prominence only recently. In fact the first fellowship in critical care was established as recently as 1962 in the University of Pittsburgh. Many surgical specialties which require critical care developed much before the development of Critical Care as a subspecialty. All the patients in these units were managed by the admitting physicians (Open ICUs). Of late, the concept of Closed ICUs which are headed by critical care specialists are now fast becoming the standard of care. However, there is an acute shortage of qualified personnel to take care of the units in a developing country like India where the requirement fast outpaces the output by institutes where rigorous training is possible. As a result, most of the units are headed by Critical Care Specialists who are helped by physicians who are not rigorously trained in the skills and knowledge but rather learn with experience. Inputs are also given by admitting physicians and surgeons.
This course tries to fill the knowledge gap for those who routinely encounter critical care patients in their professional practice and needs sharpening their knowledge with a solid theoretical foundation and also practical clinical pearls. It is a combination of 5 courses viz. Mechanical Ventilation, ECMO, Clinical Nutrition, ABG & Critical Care Pearls.
